John Rodriguez is a 2020 graduate (Magna Cum Laude) of UCLA with an undergraduate degree in English. He is a non-traditional transfer student who completed most of his transfer requirements while incarcerated and upon release continued to pursue his education. Through writing and performance art, he aims to make higher education accessible to our incarcerated community members and to alleviate the stigma associated with incarceration. He plans to teach university-level courses inside prisons, using art as a form of therapy and education. His writing has appeared in The Good Men ProjectPen In the Classroom Anthology, Thinking Out Loud (2009); and in POPS the Club Anthologies from Out of the Woods Press (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020)He and Dennis Danziger’s conversation was recorded by NPR’s StoryCorps in 2019, and John was a featured speaker at an Atlantic Live Justice event in Los Angeles in 2018. John is a semi-finalist for NBC’s Nosotros Ya Tu Sabes Monologue Slam, Erasing Yellow Lines, and in 2021 he will be featured in an episode of PBS’s Roadtrip Nation. He currently serves as the program director for the reentry department (RISE) at St. John’s Well Child & Family Center.

Dennis Danziger taught English in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 24 years. He is the author of the memoir, Daddy, The Diary of an Expectant Father and the novel, A Short History of a Tall Jew. TV credits include Taxi, Kate and Allie, My Sister Sam, and The White Shadow. His plays have been produced in New York City and Los Angeles and include Almost Men (with Daniel Stern), Double Play (with Rhea Perlman and Lee Wilkof) and The Richard Nixon Sex Tapes, which have been published in the UK. His essays have appeared in The Huffington PostThe Good Men Project, and Black Clock. Co-founder of the nonprofit POPS the Club since 2014, in collaboration with his wife, the writer, Amy Friedman, Dennis is the editor of an annual award-winning anthology of student writings and artwork published by Out of the Woods Press.
