Derek Mascarenhas is a graduate of the University of Toronto SCS Creative Writing Program, a finalist and runner up for the Penguin Random House of Canada Student Award for Fiction, and a nominee for the Marina Nemat Award. His linked short story collection, Coconut Dreams (Book*hug) was called a “stunning debut” in Quill and Quire‘s starred review and The Globe and Mail named it one of the best reads from Canadian small presses. He is currently working on a speculative novel.

And deal news! Karen Boersma and Jennifer Stokes at Owlkids Books have acquired World rights to 100 CHAPATIS by Derek Mascarenhas, to be illustrated by Shantala Robinson, and a second picture book titled THE MANGO MONSTER. In 100 CHAPATIS, Simon and his Pappa make 100 chapatis as they wait for his father to call from the hospital, where his mother is having a baby. 100 CHAPATIS is slated for publication in Fall 2023, with THE MANGO MONSTER to follow in Fall 2024. Amy Tompkins at the Transatlantic Agency handled the deal for the author.
