We are thrilled to share the exciting news of the multiple international deals recently closed for Emma Knight’s debut novel, THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE COMMON OCTOPUS, sold in a pre-empt to Pamela Dorman at Pamela Dorman Books/Viking and in a pre-empt to Nicole Winstanley and Laura Dosky of Penguin Canada by Samantha Haywood with Laura Cameron of the Transatlantic Agency, and at auction to Katherine Burdon of Quercus UK by Evan Brown on behalf of Samantha Haywood!

THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE COMMON OCTOPUS follows Pen and her best friend Alice as they dig into the mystery surrounding an eccentric aristocratic British family with long-secret ties to Pen’s own family, while navigating their first year at Edinburgh University. For fans of THE WHALEBONE THEATRE, CURTIS SITTENFELD, and Sally Rooney’s NORMAL PEOPLE.

Emma Knight is a writer, journalist and entrepreneur based in Toronto, Ontario. Emma’s writing about books, maternal health and more has appeared in Literary Hub, British VOGUE, The Globe and Mail, The Walrus and The International New York Times. 

Emma is a co-creator and co-host of the culture podcast, FANFARE and has written two cookbooks published by Penguin Random House, HOW TO EAT WITH ONE HAND: RECIPES AND OTHER NOURISHMENT FOR NEW AND EXPECTANT PARENTS (2021) and THE GREENHOUSE COOKBOOK (2017). 

In 2014, Emma co-founded an organic beverage company called Greenhouse, which over the last decade has grown from a single shop in Toronto into a multi-award-winning, vertically integrated business that has sold tens of millions of bottles across Canada and is now launching in the United States.  

Emma studied Modern Languages at the University of Edinburgh and has an MA in Journalism and an MSc. in International Development from Sciences Po, Paris. While in Paris, Emma worked for The New York Times and the World Association of Newspapers.
