Matt Hern is the author or co-author of eleven books of non-fiction in the areas of politics, current events, climate change, and urban studies, and one about basketball from his former life as a sportswriter. He is the founder and co-director of the non-profit called Solid State Community Industries, which launches worker co-ops with people from racialized migrant backgrounds.

The proposal for his next book, THE OCEANS BETWEEN US: NATIONALISM ON THE EDGE, currently on submission, uses as its touchpoint the fortress-cities of Melilla and Ceuta – two Spanish colonial exclaves entirely within the borders of Morocco. Both cities are surrounded by heavily-guarded, double, twenty-foot razor-wire fences with only one hyper-securitized border land-exit. Outside the city migrants assemble every day, trying to swim around or climb over the razor wire because once they get inside, they’re in the EU. Matt meets with migrants, refugee organizations, residents, and officials on both sides of the issue to delve into the question of borders, nationalism, and migrant rights.

Matt lives in near Vancouver, British Columbia on the Fraser River in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory. To learn more about Matt, visit his website: https://www.matthern.ca/
