Kids love Ti-Jean! Transatlantic is delighted that students voted When Apples Grew Noses and White Horses Flew: Tales of Ti-Jean by Jan Andrews and Dušan Petričić (Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press) the winner of the Silver Birch Express Award in the Ontario Library Association’s 2012 Forest of Reading. This adds to the honours this book is receiving.

Jan Andrews tells three tales of Quebec’s traditional folktale hero, Ti-Jean. In “Ti-Jean and the Princess of Tomboso” he outwits a greedy princess; in “Ti-Jean the Marble Player” he gets the best of a pint-sized scoundrel; and in “How Ti-Jean Became a Fiddler” he turns the tables on a too-clever-for-her-own-good seigneur’s daughter, and finds true love in the process.

The Silver Birch Express list celebrates fiction and non-fiction titles at a grade 3 to 4 reading level.
