AnnabelDirector Deepa Mehta’s Hamilton Mehta Productions has acquired film rights to Kathleen Winter’s 2010 debut novel Annabel, after the expiry of a previous agreement.

Annabel has been published in 18 countries and was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, Orange Prize for Fiction, and Governor General’s Literary Award. Mehta is known for other book-to-film adaptations, including Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, and for her Academy Award-nominated Water.  Her latest work, Beeba Boys, debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and will open internationally in October.

The deal was arranged by Shaun Bradley at the Transatlantic Agency.
