Knopf Canada has commissioned Kathleen Winter (Annabel and Boundless) to create a book for the Canadian sesquicentennial in 2017. The work — to be in the genre of the author’s choosing — will be based on the life of General James Wolfe, the commander who famously led the British to overthrow the French in Quebec at the Plains of Abraham in 1759 . The work (as yet untitled) will be based on letters written by Wolfe — primarily to his mother – from the age of thirteen through to two weeks before his death. These letters are held by the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto, and will form the core of Winter’s narrative. The deal was done by Shaun Bradley, with Lynn Henry and Amanda Lewis at Penguin Random House Canada.
