Congratulations to the six Transatlantic clients nominated for the 2021 National Magazine Awards! The National Media Awards Foundation (NMAF) is a bilingual charity dedicated to promoting excellence in journalism and visual creation. Since 1977, the Foundation has been awarding prizes to journalists, writers, photographers, illustrators and other professionals of the press, who are distinguished by the quality of their work.

“Black in the Ivory Tower” by Hadiya Roderique (The Walrus) was nominated for Best Short Feature Writing. Hadiya is represented by Samantha Haywood and Leonicka Valcius.

“My Mum and Mister Rogers” by Cinders McLeod (The Walrus) was nominated for Best One of a Kind Storytelling.

“Inside the second wave of the HIV epidemic in the Philippines” for which Rachel Giese was a contributing writer (Xtra Magazine) was nominated for both Best Personal Journalism and Best Long-Form Feature Writing (6000+ words). The podcast “Off the Chart: Xtra’s L Word Podcast” for which Rachel Giese is executive producer (Xtra Magazine) was also nominated for Best Podcast: News & Politics.

“Houses of Horror” by Jason McBride (Toronto Life) was nominated for Best Long-Form Feature Writing (6000+ words).

“The Long Shadow of Elizabeth Wettlaufer” for which Denise Balkissoon was the handling editor (Chatelaine) was nominated for Best Long-Form Feature Writing, and “Still Up in the Air” for which Denise was the handling editor (Hazlitt) was nominated for Best Essay.

“Ex-Smoker” by Sam Shelstad (Taddle Creek) was nominated for Best Fiction.

Cinders McLeod, Rachel Giese, Jason McBride, Denis Balkissoon and Sam Shelstad are represented by Samantha Haywood.

“To Love Again: A Natural Hair Journey” by Tea Mutonji (Room) was nominated for Best Essay and edited by Chelene Knight. Chelene is an author, editor and Literary Agent at Transatlantic.
