Barbara Nickel and Lorna Schultz Nicholson Shortlisted for the 2022 High Plains Book Awards!

Established in 1994, the Alberta Book Awards recognize and celebrate the best of the Alberta book publishing industry. Each year, the Alberta Book Publishing Awards winners are selected through a peer jury process in up to 16 award categories. This much-anticipated event draws industry, government and media attention to the world-class excellence of Alberta’s publishing industry.

DEAR PETER, DEAR ULLA by Barbara Nickel (Thistledown Press) has been shortlisted for the Children’s Book category of the 2022 High Plains Book Awards! Barbara Nickel grew up in Saskatchewan and attended Goshen College in Indiana, where she studied music (violin) and English literature. She received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia, where she also taught. Barbara has published acclaimed books for both adults and young people. Her children’s titles include Hannah Waters and the Daughter of Johann Sebastian Bach, which won a B.C. Book Prize and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award, as well as a picture book, A Boy Asked the Wind, which was a finalist for the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award. Barbara lives in Yarrow, British Columbia, with her husband and two sons.

WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT by Lorna Schultz Nicolson (Red Deer Press) has been shortlisted for the Young Adults Book category of the 2022 High Plains Book Awards. Lorna Schultz Nicholson is the author of many books about Canadian sports figures, as well as the celebrated One-to-One series of novels. A former radio host and health & lifestyle reporter, she is now a full-time author and presenter. She lives with her family in Edmonton.
