Doubleday Canada’s Kiara Kent has acquired Canadian English rights to Giller Prize and Canada Reads finalist Megan Gail Coles’s new fiction in a two-book deal, starting with SISTERS & COUSINS, a tightly interwoven novel in parts to be published in 2024.
An ensemble cast with wide-ranging family and living arrangements, SISTERS & COUSINS explores aging, dating, parenting and marriage, and the forceful collision of love and abuse, in relation to intergenerational systems of oppression and prevailing social inequities in modern day Newfoundland and Labrador.
With Coles’s biting humour and remarkable insight, the characters wrestle with self-delusion, deceit and bitter loneliness as they navigate—sometimes reinforcing and other times resisting—the fallout of these violent and deeply rooted systems. Coles examines class, race and misogyny, themes which feature prominently in her previous award-winning fiction publications SMALL GAME HUNTING AT THE LOCAL COWARD GUN CLUB (Scotiabank Giller Prize, Canada Reads finalist and winner of the Winterset Award and Governor General for French translation) and EATING HABITS OF THE CHRONICALLY LONESOME (winner of the BMO Winterset Award and ReLit Award and John Savage First Book Award and Writers Trust 5×5 Prize).
The deal was arranged by Samantha Haywood of Transatlantic Agency.
Congratulations Megan!
