Transatlantic is thrilled to announce that AFTER WE DROWNED by Jill Yonit Goldberg has been acquired by Brian Kaufman at Anvil Press!

Influenced by the dark edginess of Southern Gothic literature but set in 1984 to the music of Tina Turner, Madonna, and Stevie Nicks, AFTER WE DROWNED is an environmental cataclysm/coming of age story that takes place in the swampy heart of Cajun America.

After 15-year-old Jesse’s father barely survives an explosion on an oil rig, Jesse struggles to navigate the demands of looking after his family amid a culture that includes poverty, guns, and the constant threat of violence.

Jill Yonit Goldberg is a prairie-born former Montrealer living in Vancouver, BC. She is co-author on The Fire Still Burns: Life In and After Residential School (Purich Books/UBC Press, 2023). An excerpt of her novel, AFTER WE DROWNED was selected as the third-place finalist in the Master’s Review novel excerpt contest in the spring of 2023, while other work including essays, short stories, and poetry have been anthologized and included in publications such as Room Magazine, The Globe and Mail, The London Reader, and SubTerrain among others.
